A NEW, DIRECT PATH TO GASTROPARESIS DIAGNOSIS The Cairn 13C-Spirulina Gastric Emptying Breath Test (GEBT) is the only FDA-approved breath test for the measurement of solid phase gastric emptying and to in the diagnosis of gastroparesis. GEBT is now "Guideline Recommended" for the diagnosis of gastroparesis (ACG, AGA, EUC). GEBT is an FDA-approved, non-radioactive, non-invasive, orally administered, standardized, office-based test and is also now FDA-Approved for virtual “at-home use” via telehealth. GEBT was validated against the 4-hour gold standard reference method of gastric scintigraphy (Mayo, Rochester). Before and after eating the test meal, breath samples are collected from the patient. The labeled by-products of 13C-Spirulina (proteins, carbohydrates and fats) are absorbed and metabolized, giving rise to 13C-labeled carbon dioxide which is excreted in the breath. Samples are sent to Cairn’s CLIA-certified laboratory for analysis by gas isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GIRMS). A patient gastric emptying report with this data is prepared by Cairn’s laboratory and returned to the physician. The test can be completed in a single day, and the results are available within 24 to 48 hours. GEBT is now covered by Medicare.
