Nyree Kimberly Thorne, MD, received her Bachelor of Science in biology at North Carolina Central University in Durham, and her Doctor of Medicine at the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center at Syracuse. She completed her residency and gastroenterology fellowship at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, NY. Dr. Thorne is a clinical associate professor of medicine in gastroenterology and affiliate of the Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Winston Salem, NC. She is the director of the neuro-gastroenterology and motility program. Her areas of interest include pelvic floor disorders, including chronic constipation and fecal incontinence, as well as functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome. She has participated in numerous leaderships training programs including the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Women’s Leadership Development Program as well as one of the inaugural participants of the ACG’s Advanced Leadership Development Program. She has also participated in a legislative “fly-in" to engage member of congress regarding pertinent issues and pending bills that would impact the delivery of care to gastrointestinal patients. Interests outside of gastrointestinal motility include colon cancer and health disparities in colon cancer. She is the current co-chair of the North Carolina Colorectal Roundtable committee which is a state wide coalition of public, private, voluntary organizations and private individuals dedicated to reducing the morbidity and mortality of colon cancer in North Carolina through coordinated leadership, strategic planning and advocacy.
