Dr. Edward V. Loftus, Jr., MD, FACG, earned his MD at the University of Pennsylvania and completed a residency in internal medicine at Temple University Health Sciences Center in Philadelphia. He served one year as a general medical officer in the Indian Health Service at Fort Belknap P.H.S. Indian Hospital in Harlem, MT, and then completed a gastroenterology fellowship at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He has been on the Mayo Clinic consulting staff since 1995. He served as Director of the IBD Interest Group at Mayo Rochester from 2008-2019. He is Co-Director of the Advanced IBD Fellowship at Mayo Rochester. Dr. Loftus is a Fellow of ACG, ACP, and the AGA. Also, he is a member of ASGE, CCFA, and ECCO. He has served on several ACG committees and has been an abstract reviewer for ACG, AGA, and AIBD/CCFA. He served as Co-Chair and then Chair of the Immunology, Microbiology, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IMIBD) section of the AGA Institute Council (2012-2016). He was elected to membership in the International Organization for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in 2008. Dr. Loftus was named Teacher of the Year by the Mayo gastroenterology fellows in 2010-2011. He served as Associate Editor of The American Journal of Gastroenterology (2003-2009) and as Associate Editor of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (2006-2013). He delivered the Internal Named Professor Lecture to the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo in 2018. In 2019, he received the Distinguished Clinician Award from the AGA and the Research Mentor Award from the IMIBD Section of the AGA Council. He received the Mayo Dept of Medicine Outstanding Mentorship in Research Award in 2019. Dr. Loftus has published over 400 peer-reviewed original articles and more than 600 abstracts and has lectured extensively on the epidemiology, natural history, diagnosis, and medical management of inflammatory bowel diseases.
