P0436 - Description of Patient Outcomes Presented at a Multidisciplinary Esophageal Conference

Introduction: Multidisciplinary teams (MDT) are well-established in the oncologic realm with clearcut improvements in patient outcomes. Currently, there is minimal literature illustrating the use of MDT’s in non-oncologic foregut disorders. Herein, we aim to describe MDT’s utilization for non-malignant, esophageal diagnoses.

Methods: Patients presented at our Single-Center MDT conference from 2019 – 2023 were identified via electronic documentation. Descriptive data was retrospectively collected including chief complaint, foregut diagnoses, prior treatments, and post-MDT recommendations with outcomes. Datapoints were used to describe the population evaluated at our conferences.

Results: 77 patients were presented at the MDT conferences. The average age and BMI were 58 and 29.7, respectively. Most patients (72%) had at least 3 esophageal diagnoses, including 2 patients with 6 diagnoses. GERD was the most common disease (79.2%). Less common cases include dilated esophagus related to stasis (1.3%), roux statis syndrome (1.3%), esophageal diverticulitis (2.6%), and pseudoachalasia (5.2%). Dysphagia was the most reported complaint (40.3%), in which 74% of the patients had GERD.

Of the MDT consensuses, 55.8% of the patients were recommended surgery, 29.9% were recommended an endoscopic procedure, and 27.3% were recommended medications. 44/77 patients have completed their treatments with subjective outcomes noted in Table 1. Overall, 75% of the treated patients had symptom improvement, 22.7% had no change, and 1 (2.27%) reported worsening of their symptoms. There was no significant difference in outcomes between each subgroup (medication, endoscopic, surgery). 66.7% to 80% of patients in each subgroup reported improvement in symptoms. 16% to 33% of patients in each group had no change in symptoms.

Discussion: Currently, there is minimal literature investigating the description and benefit of foregut MDT conferences. Our research describes the population’s intricacy, including the multitude of previously failed treatments. Even with the complex cohort, a symptom improvement in 75% of treated patients was noted. Our data suggests MDT benefits patients with non-malignant esophageal disorders.
