Laura Targownik, MD, MSHS, is currently the Departmental Division Director of Gastroenterology and Hepatology ar the University of Toronto, a position she has held since 2019, and is a clinical researcher and Associate Professor of Medicine based at Mount Sinai Hospital (Toronto). She graduated from the University of Manitoba Medical School in 1997 and completed her residency training in Internal Medicine in 2000. She then went to University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) to complete a 3-year fellowship in Digestive Diseases while also obtaining a Master’s of Science (Health Services) from the UCLA School of Public Health. She was on faculty at the University of Manitoba from 2003-2019, where she served as the Division Director of Gastroenterology. Dr. Targownik is a nationally recognized researcher in IBD and has held funding from Crohn’s and Colitis Canada, the ACG, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. She is currently an Associate Editor for the Journal of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology, and has served on the Examiner’s Board on the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for Gastroenterology. Dr. Targownik has authored or co-authored over 190 articles in peer-reviewed publications. She is a member of the Scientific and Medical Advisory Council of Crohn's and Colitis Canada and served on the steering committee for the Impact of IBD Reports in 2018, 2021, and 2023. She is currently an Associate Editor for The American Journal of Gastroenterology. She is a proud member of Rainbows in Gastroenterology, who advocate for improved LGBTQ+ GI related health care and inclusion.
