B. Joseph Elmunzer, MD, MSc, is an advanced therapeutic endoscopist and the Peter Cotton Professor of Medicine and Endoscopic Innovation in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Elmunzer’s clinical practice focuses on advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including ERCP, EUS (including interventional endosonography), endoscopic mucosal resection and ablation, luminal stenting and recanalization, endoluminal suturing, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), and per oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM). Dr. Elmunzer is an NIH-funded investigator whose research interests include clinical trials in gastrointestinal endoscopy and improving the safety of ERCP. He spearheaded a large-scale multicenter randomized trial demonstrating that indomethacin is effective for preventing post-ERCP pancreatitis. The results of this study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, have meaningfully impacted clinical practice worldwide. He is currently engaged in a series of research initiatives that aim to continue bringing important scientific discoveries to the forefront of clinical practice.
